The use of infrared thermography for detection of excessive intensity in mental/physical exercises

Individual control of organism reactions during practice can reveal the overload.

Knowledge of overload indicators is useful for an exercise intensity regulation. It is clear that personal reactions to any stimulus are individual; the same load may be easy for one person and very serious for another. According to H. Selye stress theory, the overload for the organism (by totally different nature) produces the same (nonspecific) responses - adrenal enlargement, gastrointestinal ulceration, and thymus involution with a decrease of lymphocytes percentage in blood, etc. These effects show that the chosen intensity of exercises is inadequate (excessively serious) for the organism, and the adaptation for such intensive exercise is possible only for a limited period of time with severe diseases to follow. Before discussion concerning application of infrared thermography I would like to give an example how the individual estimation of load helps to decrease stress-related unfavorable effects.

Nonspecific organism reactions to the stimuli of low and medium strength and stress reduction (according to L.Kh. Garkavi, E.B. Kwakina and M.L. Ukolova).

In 1977, L.Kh. Garkavi, E.B. Kwakina and M.L. Ukolova published a study called "Adaptation reactions and organism resistance" [1, 2]. They discovered the existence of nonspecific adaptive anti-stress reactions in response to very low and medium stimuli and proposed to use these stimuli for reducing the unfavorable effects of stress. Adaptogens - bee glue and gold root, etc., graduated physical loads, various magnetic fields, electrical stimulation, adrenalin and antidepressant, etc. were used as stimuli. They called these reactions the "training reactions" (RT) and the "activation reaction" (RA). Later, L.Kh. Garkavi divided the latter into calm activation (RCA), increased activation (RIA) and excessive activation reactions (REA). Each of these reactions were studied and characterized by a number of changes in nervous - hormonal states, mental - emotional states, etc. To support any type of reactions, the suitable doze of stimuli should be chosen and given every day; in order to do this, the leukocyte concentration and the percentage of different white cells in blood [3] were as a rule measured every morning. However, in about 90% of the cases the reaction can be identified by questioning of patients about their emotional state. For example, it was found that the percentage of lymphocytes was lower than 20, 20 - 27, 28-33, 34 - 40 and higher than 40 (per cent) during stress reaction, RT, RA, RCA and RIA correspondingly; nervous excitation was decreased during RT and during RCA a patient felt strong euphoria, etc. After achieving of the stable RT (after daily stimulation), patients became more resistant to many toxic factors including carcinogens; malignant tumors could be decreased and even dissolved, and many other favorable effects were observed [1]. It should be noted that the whole cycle of reactions can be repeated with higher dozes of stimuli. In this case, the energy cost of desired state support was higher. Later on L.Kh. Garkavi and colleagues added the other method for diagnosis of the reaction type, i.e. recording of pulse waves [2].

Among above described stimuli for stress correction/prevention I favor the reaction of training. There is no need to measure the white blood cell formula. This state can be easily identified from the mood. If the reaction of training is achieved, you feel a slight sleepiness, you feel a bit sluggish. I felt such decrease in the nervous system excitability during short rest after a long walk along beautiful landscape or even after a good dinner. I suggest that suitable regular acupressure treatments would give the desirable reaction if being performed by an experienced reflexologist. However the best way of the reaction of training achievement is the dally performance of a suitable meditation.

Such stresses (photo 1 and 2) are not unhealthy. However, afterwards it is nice to have a rest – to relax and to see serene valley with mountain lake or edelweiss.
